California Institute of the Arts, Program in Art, seeks applications for two regular, full-time faculty positions. We are seeking one emerging and one mid-career faculty member.

Following from our legacy of conceptual and critical practices, and the important example of the Feminist Art Program, the Program in Art is working to build and sustain a heterogenous, racially, culturally and ideologically diverse group of artists and scholars.

We value pedagogical diversity, rigor, inquiry, experimentation and interdisciplinarity. The School of Art is committed to the following areas of interest including: studio and extended genres, gender and queer theory, politics and history of racialization, postcolonial studies, consideration and critique of media and new technologies, artist-centered approaches to curatorial studies, social and public practice. We are seeking colleagues who wish to contribute to the areas listed above and those who are committed to an expansive artistic studio practice that will flourish in a theoretically informed and generous pedagogical environment. We are particularly interested in artist-practitioners that can trouble Eurocentric conventions of history, theory, and practice.

For this search we are interested in candidates that are eager to explore and share expertise in one or more of the following areas: new technologies; moving image, sound and installation; experimental approaches to drawing and painting; formal and social investigations of textiles; and/or other contemporary methods that can inspire and prepare emerging artists for a sustainable life of creative practice.

Candidates should share the program’s commitment to diversity and social justice. They will teach across the curriculum from first-year BFA to MFA courses and will rotate teaching assignments such as core Foundation courses, skills-based studio classes, as well as seminars, theory and critique courses. CalArts has a strong pedagogical tradition wherein faculty are encouraged to develop experimental coursework based on their research or professional interests. We are looking for candidates eager to build new coursework that is dynamic and responsive to the needs of the community and who possess the cultural competency to support teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students of varied backgrounds, capabilities, perspectives, social identities, and gender expressions.

Expectations
Regular faculty member workload involves teaching two courses a semester; mentoring students and conducting independent studies; attending faculty meetings; participating in student reviews and admissions portfolio reviews; attending faculty retreats. Regular faculty members also alternate Program Director duties throughout their appointment and are expected to maintain a professional practice.

Requirements
Qualified applicants must have promising (for emerging) or significant (for mid-career) professional accomplishments and/or exhibition records. Candidates in early career are preferred to have at least two years teaching at the college level or have comparable experience through activist community engagement, workshop facilitation, and/or other forms of instruction. Candidates in mid-career must have several years of comparable experience.

The Art Program seeks to employ faculty who can engage our diverse communities of learners. Candidates should have experience in building an equitable and diverse artistic environment through teaching, mentoring, practice, life experiences, and service. We welcome candidates committed to supporting undergraduate and graduate students of varied backgrounds, capabilities, perspectives, social identities, and gender expressions. CalArts is an equal-opportunity employer.

CalArts has a multidisciplinary approach to its studies of the arts through six schools: Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music and Theater. CalArts encourages students to explore and recognize the complexity of the many aspects of the arts. It is supported by a distinguished faculty of practicing artists and provides its Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts students with the hands-on training and exposure necessary for an artist’s growth. CalArts was founded in 1961 and opened in 1969 as the first institution of higher learning in the United States specifically for students interested in the pursuit of degrees in all areas of visual and performing arts.
