Can art be an ally of the medical sciences? How can museums and other cultural actors contribute to health and well-being? How can creativity contribute to innovation in health?

Using a transdisciplinary approach, the International Conference on Art and Health aims to share and reflect on the practices that are at the intersection between art and medicine.

Professionals and researchers from different countries and disciplinary fields—from medicine, nursing, and neuroscience to imaging in medicine and microbiology, as well as art, design, and architecture—open a debate on the present, seeking to understand how art and science, two areas of knowledge often considered as distinct, can be combined and contribute to change and to a better quality of life.

Throughout the day, there will be several panels with the participation of names such as Ab Rogers Design, Alexandre Castro Caldas, Elisabeth Ioannides, Juliet L King, Luiza Teixeira de Freitas, Rachel Massey or Stephen Legari, and keynotes by Daisy Fancourt: “The Population Health Benefits of Arts and Cultural Engagement” (online participation); Isis Betancourt Torres: “Art in Medical Education,” and Semir Zeki: “The Science of Beauty.”

The conference ends with a guided tour of the “Plug-in” exhibition by Joana Vasconcelos at MAAT, with the presence of the artist and a cocktail in the exhibition space.

Programme and coordination of the conference by Joana Henriques (MAAT), João Pinharanda (MAAT) and Luís Campos (doctor and artist).
