A vital element for human and non-human species, as well as a metaphorical and emotional element, water is simultaneously political and economic. Fresh water scarcity is indisputably a global problem, with a dramatic impact in the Portuguese context.
Focusing on seven different hydro-geographies profoundly affected by anthropocentric action, FERTILE FUTURES invites young architects to collaborate with experts from other fields of knowledge, and present models for a more sustainable, healthy, and equitable future, based on non-hierarchical cooperation between disciplines, generations and species.
The production of raw content, emerging from a strategic complementarity between architectural practice, theory and pedagogy, defines the tripartite approach to experimentation and shared reflection: seven Design Workshops, five Assemblies of Thought and an International Summer Seminar.
Learning from the African context, like from others that have long witnessed extreme climatic conditions, spanning between Portugal an Venice, FERTILE FUTURES will directly address Lesley Lokko’s call to support the pertinence of architecture’s contribution to the design of a decarbonized, decolonized, and collaborative future.
