Join us at e-flux on Thursday, December 14 at 7pm for a live performance with Laura Ortman, accompanied by gabby fluke-mogul. The performance will be followed by a Q&A with Ortman, moderated by Martin Bisi

Laura Ortman (White Mountain Apache) is a soloist musician, composer and vibrant collaborator who creates across multiple platforms. She has collaborated with artists such as Tony Conrad, Jock Soto, Raven Chacon, Nanobah Becker, Okkyung Lee, Martin Bisi, Jeffrey Gibson, Caroline Monnet, Tanya Lukin Linklater, Martha Colburn, and New Red Order, and as part of the trio In Defense of Memory. An inquisitive and exquisite violinist, Ortman is versed in Apache violin, piano, electric guitar, keyboards, and amplified violin, and often sings through a megaphone. She is a producer of capacious field recordings. In 2008, She founded the Coast Orchestra, an all-Native American orchestral ensemble that performed a live soundtrack to Edward Curtis’s film In the Land of the Head Hunters (1914), the first silent feature film to star an all-Native American cast. Ortman is the recipient of the Institute of American Indian Arts Fellowship, Forge Project Fellowship, United States Artists Fellowship, Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists, Jerome Foundation Composer and Sound Artist Fellowship, Art Matters Grant, among others. She has performed at The Museum of Modern Art, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, The Stone, New Museum, Toronto Biennial of Art, and Centre Pompidou, among others. Ortman was also a participating artist in the 2019 Whitney Biennial.

gabby fluke-mogul is a New York-based violinist, improviser, composer, and educator. fluke-mogul weaves within the threads of avant and free jazz, with deep roots in improvised and experimental music. They have collaborated with Nava Dunkelman, Joanna Mattrey, Ava Mendoza, Charles Burnham, Fred Frith, Luke Stewart, Zeena Parkins, William Parker, and Pauline Oliveros, among many other musicians, poets, dancers, and visual artists. fluke-mogul is a Roulette 2023 Jerome Artist-in-Residence. They have released music on Relative Pitch Records, Notice Recordings, and Tripticks Tapes. 

Martin Bisi is an original No Wave, Post-Punk, and Experimental music producer from New York. He has been a central figure in the city’s musical formation for the past four decades. Bisi has made landmark recordings by Brian Eno (On Land), Sonic Youth, Swans, Unsane, Lydia Lunch, John Zorn, Africa Bambaataa, JG Thirlwell, Cop Shoot Cop, Herbie Hancock (“Rockit”), Live Skull, White Hills, Dresden Dolls, and countless others. He worked with Laura Ortman on multiple occasions, recording and mixing her solo albums.
